Kent Russell’s “Habeas Hints” column appears quarterly in Prison Legal News (PLN). The column provides "habeas hints" to prisoners who are considering or handling habeas corpus petitions as their own attorneys ("in pro per"). The focus of the column is habeas corpus practice under AEDPA, the 1996 habeas corpus law which now governs habeas corpus practice throughout the U.S.
The topics covered in “Habeas Hints” include the whole range of issues arising on federal habeas corpus, including drafting the petition, proving up the facts, dealing with the applicable law, defending the petition against dismissal, getting evidentiary hearings, obtaining permission to appeal, and filing appeal briefs and petitions for certiorari. In addition, at the end of every calendar year, “Habeas Hints” reviews the most significant U.S. Supreme Court decisions coming down during the previous term.
“Habeas Hints” has been rated by PLN’s readers as one of its most popular lawyer-drafted columns. PLN readers can read previous columns on the Prison Legal News website.
